The first year of treatment predicts the prognosis of asthma over 25 y—A prospective study
Allergy Aug 26, 2019
Kauppinen R, et al. - Researchers analyzed adult-onset, newly diagnosed asthma in steroid-naïve patients (n = 162) in this investigator-driven, real-life follow-up study in order to determine the consequences of therapy over the 25-year course of the disease, and to find out if long-term prognosis can be predicted by the first treatment year's forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). In the 25-year examinations, 83% of the 133 living patients participated. The later lung function level in adult-onset asthma appeared to be predicted by the level of FEV1 attained during the first treatment year. The cessation of the asthma treatment was reported in one quarter of the patients, but these individuals had better health-related quality of life as compared with those continuing to use ICS. Overall, 16% of patients achieved clinical remission, which is in concordance with other studies.
