The extent of neck dissection among patients who receive adjuvant radiotherapy for HNSCC and its effect on disease-specific and overall survival
ENT Journal Apr 10, 2019
Aboelkheir UM, et al. - Via performing this retrospective study of patients who had clinical metastatic mucosal primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to cervical lymph nodes, researchers investigated the influence of the extent of neck dissection among patients who receive adjuvant radiotherapy on regional recurrence and survival. This study was done at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Buffalo, New York from 2004 to 2015. According to type of neck dissection, 74 patients were divided into 2 groups as either selective neck dissection (SND) or comprehensive neck dissection (CND). Outcomes revealed no statistically significant differences in the overall and disease-specific survival between the SND and CND cohorts. Hence regional control and survival rates achieved with SND, combined with proper adjuvant treatment, were comparable to CND.
