The epidemiology and clinical characteristics of pediatric tuberculosis in Denmark 2009–2014 highlights targets for prevention
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Oct 31, 2020
Nordholm AC, Holden IK, Hartling UB, et al. - As most pediatric tuberculosis (TB) cases in Western Europe occur among immigrants, researchers sought to stratify data by first/second-generation immigrants. They conducted a nationwide study of 145 children (< 18 years) who were diagnosed with TB from 2009 to 2014 in Denmark. Among these cases, 99 were immigrants (68%) of which 54 (55%) were second-generation immigrants. In Denmark, the majority of pediatric TB is observed among immigrant children with symptomatic TB, whereas diagnosis at earlier disease stages is more frequent among Danish children. Missed opportunities to prevent TB disease is reported in nearly one-third of TB cases. Enhanced adult case identification with comprehensive contact investigation among children, tailored screening and vaccination of immigrant children, and increased awareness of diagnosing and treating latent TB infection in children are emphasized for improvements.
