The epidemiology and clinical characteristics of pediatric tuberculosis in Denmark 2009–2014 highlights targets for prevention
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Oct 23, 2020
Nordholm AC, Holden IK, Hartling UB, et al. - As most pediatric tuberculosis (TB) cases in Western Europe occur among immigrants, researchers sought to stratify the available data by first/second-generation immigrants. They conducted a nationwide study of children < 18 years with TB from 2009 to 2014 in Denmark. Among a total of 145 identified cases, 99 were immigrants (68%) of which 54 (55%) were second-generation immigrants. In Denmark, immigrant children with symptomatic TB form the majority of the population with pediatric TB, whereas diagnosis at earlier disease stages was reported for more Danish children. Nearly one-third of TB cases may represent missed opportunities to avert TB disease. Enhanced adult case identification with comprehensive contact investigation among children, tailored screening and vaccination of immigrant children, and increased awareness of diagnosing and treating latent TB infection in children are required for achieving improvements.
