The efficiency of routine histopathological examination for bilateral nasal polyposis
ENT Journal Feb 19, 2020
Safadi A, Carmel-Neiderman NN, Toledano R, et al. - From a large series of patients who had endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis with bilateral nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and the rate of neoplasms, researchers conducted this retrospective study to characterize the histopathology of polyps. The sample consisted of histopathological results of all individuals with CRSwNP who had functional endoscopic nasal surgery and in whom histologic examination was performed in a tertiary medical center from 2006 to 2015. For this analysis, 235 patients had bilateral nasal polypectomy and histopathologic examinations of the surgical specimens. In patients presenting with bilateral nasal polyps, inverted papilloma (IP) and other neoplasms are considered rare incidental findings. The results of this study showed that, though small, the incidence of unexpected diagnosis in nonsuspicious bilateral nasal polyposis is higher than the most common pathology recorded in the literature with IP. The positive association between an unexpected diagnosis and rising patient age was further illustrated in this report. The authors emphasize that in the elderly population at least a regular histopathological test should be carried out.
