The efficacy of lung volume reduction coil treatment in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) type II respiratory failure
International Journal of COPD Mar 05, 2020
Yildiz F - The researcher performed this study with 11 cases of severe COPD and emphysema, to ascertain the efficiency of lung volume reduction coil (LVRC) treatment in severe COPD patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure. In patients suffering from severe COPD (FEV1 < %45) and Type-2 respiratory insufficiency (PCO2 55– 80 mmHg) who were receiving medical therapy and CPAP therapy, the researcher applied the LVRC treatment method in upper lobes of both lungs. A follow-up of 12 months was performed. Starting with the first month of the LVRC treatment, a significant decline was evident in the PCO2 levels in all patients. Overall, it was concluded that in patients with severe COPD, physiological and functional recovery, as well as progress in the quality of life, can be achieved by using the LVRC method. Significant reductions in carbon dioxide levels, as well as improvement in life quality and respiratory function tests, were seen consequent to LVRC treatment in patients with hypercapnic respiratory failure.
