The efficacy and safety of prochlorperazine in patients with acute migraine: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain Apr 20, 2019
Golikhatir I, et al. - Randomized clinical trials investigating the effect of prochlorperazine (PCP) on headache relief were identified searching electronic databases (Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane) to examine if it is safe and efficacious to use PCP in patients with acute migraine headache in the emergency department (ED). Researchers identified 450 citations, with the inclusion criteria met by 11 studies (n=771) with 15 comparison arms. Overall, compared to placebo, metoclopramide, and other active comparators for headache relief, PCP was reported to be more effective. As per outcomes, an acute attack can be stopped and the need for rescue analgesia in the ED could be reduced using PCP for adult patients with acute migraine, but PCP was correlated with an increased risk of adverse events vs placebo.
