The efficacy and safety of paravertebral block combined with parecoxib during video-assisted thoracic surgery: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Pain Research Feb 15, 2020
Yang J, Hao Z, Li W, et al. - The efficacy and safety of preemptive ultrasound-guided paravertebral block (PVB) combined with parecoxib during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) were determined. Researchers divided 74 patients who underwent VATS under general anesthesia in their hospital between November 2017 and November 2018 into two groups (P group and C group). In the P group, they administered 40 mg parecoxib intravenously 30 min prior to surgery and then every 12 h postoperatively for 48 h. In the C group, they provided normal saline to the patients at the same intervals. Under real-time ultrasound guidance, they performed PVBs before anesthesia induction. Outcomes revealed a correlation of PVB combined with parecoxib with better pain relief, reduced sufentanil and ketorolac consumption, less hemodynamic instability, and lower surgery-related stress response. However, the groups were not significantly different in terms of the incidences of chronic pain 3 and 6 months after surgery and the risk of complications except urinary retention.
