BMC Ophthalmology Jul 01, 2019
Du Y, et al. - Researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness and safety of inositol, a naturally occurring six-carbon sugar derivative found in most foods including breast milk, supplementation in preterm infants for preventing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). For this investigation, they synthesized the evidence from six randomized clinical trials including 1194 preterm infants. According to findings, inositol supplementation may not have an effect on the prevention of severe ROP but a trend towards an increase in preterm infant mortality of less than 32 weeks. Based on present evidence, routine inositol supplementation for preterm infants should not be suggested.
