The effects of preoperative moderate to severe anaemia on length of hospital stay: A propensity score-matched analysis in non-cardiac surgery patients
European Journal of Anaesthesiology May 20, 2021
Bulte CSE, Boer C, Hemmes SNT, et al. - In this post hoc analysis of the international observational prospective ‘Local ASsessment of VEntilatory management during General Anaesthesia for Surgery’ (LAS VEGAS) study, researchers sought to determine the frequency of moderate to severe anaemia as well as its link with length of hospital stay. Adult patients needing general anaesthesia for non-cardiac surgery were involved. In 7.7% of patients, the presence of preoperative moderate to severe anaemia was evident. A longer duration of hospital stay but not increased intraoperative complications, postoperative pulmonary complications or in-hospital mortality was observed in relation to preoperative moderate to severe anaemia, in this international cohort consisting of non-cardiac surgical patients.
