The effects of oral energy-dense supplements on nutritional status in nondiabetic maintenance hemodialysis patients
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Jun 25, 2021
Yang Y, Qin X, Chen J, et al. - Among maintenance hemodialysis patients with low dietary energy intake, this randomized controlled trial was conducted to determine how short-term use of a fat-based nutritional supplement could influence various measures of nutritional status. Participants were nondiabetic patients undergoing hemodialysis for more than 3 months and had inadequate dietary energy intake (<30kcal/kg/d). These were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive an oral fat-based energy-dense supplement (300kcal daily) or routine care for 12 weeks (n=120 per group). Findings showed that no clinically significant change in nutritional status, as measured by phase angle, was brought about by short-term administration of fat-based energy-dense nutritional supplement in nondiabetic maintenance hemodialysis patients.
