The effects of metabolic status on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease-related outcomes, beyond the presence of obesity
Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics Oct 27, 2018
Ampuero J, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study to characterize the effect of metabolic status on the outcomes of obese and non-obese patients with biopsy-proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The study sample consisted of 1,058 biopsy-proven NAFLD patients. In NAFLD patients with metabolically unhealthy status, they uncovered a higher prevalence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, kidney dysfunction and atherogenic profile, regardless of the presence of obesity. However, metabolically healthy obesity was not a harmless condition. The significance of early intervention, besides simple weight loss, in metabolically unhealthy subjects was highlighted in this analysis.
