The effects of intensive oral care before surgery for gastric cancer patients
Oral Diseases Nov 19, 2020
Nishikawa M, Honda M, Kimura R, et al. - In view of the recognized value of oral function management for preventing postoperative complications, researchers focused on patients who planned gastrectomy and examined the appropriate duration and frequency of preoperative oral care to prevent complications following surgery. They enrolled a total of 576 patients, 66 of whom had intensive oral care, in this historical cohort study. Infectious complications occurred in 2/66 (3.0%) in the intensive oral care group and 64/510 (12.5%) in the non‐intensive oral care group. Per findings, postoperative infectious complications after gastrectomy can be prevented by undertaking intensive oral care. Appropriate preoperative oral care includes at least two interventions: 3 weeks or more before and within 1 week before surgery.
