The effects of exercise on the bone health of people with cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Osteoporosis International Sep 28, 2021

Rose GL, Skinner TL, Keating SE, et al. - Cancer patients seemed to experience improvement in bone health at the hip and spine as a result of engaging in certain exercise regimens.

  • This systematic review and meta-analysis involved 22 relevant controlled trials (primarily breast/prostate cancer, sample range n = 36–498).

  • On grouping all interventions, a significant pooled ES (effect size) was noted for exercise on hip [ES = 0.112] and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) (ES = 0.269) vs control.

  • A gender impact was evident, where greater improvements in hip (ES = 0.120) and spine BMD (ES = 0.415) were observed in females than males.
