The effects of bright light treatment on affective symptoms in people with dementia: A 24-week cluster randomized controlled trial
BMC Psychiatry Aug 02, 2021
Kolberg E, Hjetland GJ, Thun E, et al. - Researchers assessed the impacts of bright light treatment (BLT) on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in people with dementia. In the intervention group, ceiling mounted LED-panels were installed (four units), affording light at 1000 lx and 6000 K (vertically at 1.2 m) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with lower values in the mornings and evenings. In the control group, standard indoor light was used (four units). Using The Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Nursing Home Version, assessment of BPSD was made. Findings demonstrated reduction of affective symptoms was achieved following 16 weeks of BLT receipt, vs the control condition; this indicates a likely benefit of BLT in nursing home patients experiencing dementia.
