The effects of added whey protein to a pre-operative carbohydrate drink on glucose and insulin response
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica May 10, 2018
Karimian N, et al. - In this double-blinded, within subject, cross-over design study, researchers determined insulin response to simple pre-operative carbohydrate (CHO) drink vs simple CHO supplemented with whey protein (CHO + W) drink in healthy volunteers. The accumulated insulin response during 180 min after ingestion of the drinks (Area under the curve, AUC) and plasma glucose and ghrelin levels, and gastric emptying rate estimated by acetaminophen absorption technique were assessed. As a result of adding whey protein to a simple CHO drink, no change was detected in the insulin response in healthy individuals. Lower peak insulin responses to simple CHO with or without whey protein were observed, relative to that previously reported with complex CHO drinks.
