Zeng Y, Li Y, Wei H, et al. - Researchers investigated the efficacy and safety of Chinese oral herbal paste in treating stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They searched PubMed, Web of Science, CENTRAL, EMBASE, CNKI, VIP, CBM, and WANFANG database in addition to two websites of clinical trial registry and included a total of 19 RCTs with 1,303 individuals comparing Chinese oral herbal paste and Western medicine (WM) with WM alone for meta-analysis. The review showed reduced exacerbation frequency in correlation with the combination of herbal paste and WM vs WM alone. Evidence gained suggest Chinese oral herbal paste as possibly effective and well-tolerated adjuvant therapy for stable COPD. In subgroup analyses, it was observed that Chinese herbal paste plus WM significantly reduced the St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire scores, COPD assessment test scores, and scores of traditional Chinese medicine syndrome, and improved clinical effective rates, lung function, and 6-minute walk distance after two to three months of treatment when compared with WM alone.
