The effectiveness of non-clozapine antipsychotics combined with electroconvulsive therapy vs clozapine combined with electroconvulsive therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia
Brain Stimulation Nov 24, 2021
Ittasakul P, Boncharoen P, Tor PC, et al. - Combination of other atypical antipsychotics (non-clozapine) plus electroconvulsive therapy (NC+ECT) was compared with clozapine plus ECT (C+ECT) with respect to their effectiveness and safety in treating treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS).
Analysis of data of 32 patients with TRS who underwent ECT.
Findings revealed an overall response rate of 65.6% (75.8% for NC+ECT group, and 56.3% for C+ECT group).
A significant decrease in the overall Brief Psychotic Rating Scale (BPRS) score was recorded in both groups.
Findings suggest that for patients with TRS, the combination of antipsychotics and ECT represents an effective and safe treatment option.
Efficacy of other atypical antipsychotics plus ECT groups is possibly comparable to that of clozapine plus ECT.
