The effectiveness of non-clozapine antipsychotics combined with electroconvulsive therapy vs clozapine combined with electroconvulsive therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia

Brain Stimulation Nov 24, 2021

Ittasakul P, Boncharoen P, Tor PC, et al. - Combination of other atypical antipsychotics (non-clozapine) plus electroconvulsive therapy (NC+ECT) was compared with clozapine plus ECT (C+ECT) with respect to their effectiveness and safety in treating treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS).

  • Analysis of data of 32 patients with TRS who underwent ECT.

  • Findings revealed an overall response rate of 65.6% (75.8% for NC+ECT group, and 56.3% for C+ECT group).

  • A significant decrease in the overall Brief Psychotic Rating Scale (BPRS) score was recorded in both groups.

  • Findings suggest that for patients with TRS, the combination of antipsychotics and ECT represents an effective and safe treatment option.

  • Efficacy of other atypical antipsychotics plus ECT groups is possibly comparable to that of clozapine plus ECT.
