The effectiveness of a group self-management education course for adults with poorly controlled epilepsy, SMILE (UK): A randomized controlled trial
Epilepsia Apr 21, 2018
Ridsdale L, et al. - This trial assessed a group self-management education courses for people with epilepsy and drug-resistant seizures. Participants were adults with epilepsy who had ≥2 seizures in the prior 12 months, were randomized to either a group course or treatment as usual. Data showed higher recruitment, course attendance, and follow-up rates than expected. No variation was reported in the quality of life between the trial arms after 12 months. In this group of people with drug-resistant seizures, a high prevalence of felt-stigma and psychological distress was seen. Social and psychological interventions could be required before or alongside self-management-education courses.
