The effect of tuberculosis on immune reconstitution among HIV patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy in Adigrat General Hospital, Eastern Tigrai, Ethiopia; 2019: A retrospective follow up study

BMC Immunology Dec 12, 2019

Negash H, Legese H, Tefera M, et al. – Because HIV-positive patients with tuberculosis exhibit less recovery of CD4+ T cells, researchers undertook a retrospective follow-up study to evaluate how tuberculosis and other determinant factors of immunological response influence HIV-positive patients on highly active antiretroviral therapy. This investigation included 393 participants (mean age: 39.2 years; 8.32 mean years of follow-up). Findings revealed a high rate of CD4+ T cells reconstitution failure, and an increased rate of failure was observed in relation to tuberculosis infection. The researchers observed an association of factors such as low CD4+ T cell baseline count, poor adherence, and urban residence, with immunological failure. Strict monitoring of CD4+ T cell counts in people with tuberculosis coinfection was recommended.
