The effect of tracheotomy on ventilator-associated pneumonia rate in children
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jan 24, 2020
Topal S, Demir E, Atakul G, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the impact of tracheotomy on ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) rates in children. Patients who underwent tracheotomy during follow-up at the pediatric intensive care unit of the hospital were evaluated. To compare VAP rates before and following a tracheotomy, logistic regression analysis was used. Participants in the study were 47 patients (28 girls and 19 boys). Data reported that the number of VAP before tracheotomy was 0.9 ± 1.2(0-8) and after tracheotomy was 0.6 ± 0.6(0-3). In children receiving long-term mechanical ventilatory support, tracheotomy reduced the VAP rate.
