The effect of time to postoperative radiation therapy on survival in resected Merkel cell carcinoma
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jul 30, 2019
Shinde A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers evaluated the time interval from surgery to adjuvant radiation therapy (aRT) and effect on Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) results. The National Cancer Database was searched for post-resection histologically confirmed nonmetastatic MCC status, and aRT was diagnosed between 2004 and 2015 that got aRT within 24 weeks of surgery. The study sample consisted of 5,952 patients. Predictors of worse overall survival on the multivariate analysis included advanced age, higher comorbidities, male sex, lower regional income, earlier diagnosis year, more advanced tumor and nodal staging, positive margins, location of head and neck and treatment at community facilities. Findings revealed that there was no association of delays from resection to aRT with survival in MCC, somewhat discordant from other malignancies like squamous cell carcinoma.
