The effect of sphenopalatine ganglion block on the postoperative pain in patients undergoing septorhinoplasty

Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jun 10, 2020

Degirmenci N, Ozdem A, Uysal H, et al. - In patients undergoing septorhinoplasty (SRP), researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to assess the impact of preoperative sphenopalatine ganglion block (SPBG) on the postoperative pain (POP). The sample consisted of 42 patients who had received septorhinoplasty. Patients who had received SPBG prior to surgery included in the Block Group (n:20) and patients who had not received SPBG prior to surgery included in the Control Group (n:22). The average dose of paracetamol used in the first 24-hour postoperative period was 500 mg in the Block group and 1,363 mg in the Control group, and the difference was statistically significant. In the Block group, the average dose of tramadol was 0 mg and in the Control group 45 mg, and the difference was statistically important. For patients undergoing SRP, preoperative SPGB is an important alternative to reduce POP and the need for rescue analgesics.
