The effect of smoking on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and the OGTT profile during pregnancy
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Oct 31, 2019
Konstantakou P, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between smoking and the risk of GDM, as well as with the OGTT profile during pregnancy. In total, 7,437 pregnant women were analyzed. At the 3rd trimester, OGTT was performed. Participants in the study were categorized as non-smokers (A), as those who ceased smoking at pregnancy (B), and as smokers (C). According to results, 5,434 women were group A, 1,191 group B and 812 group C. Data reported that the GDM rates among the groups were: A 33.7%, B 34.2%, C 34.2% (ns), however, the number of individuals requiring insulin treatment was significantly different: A 39.2%, B 47.5%, C 50.6%. Findings suggested no association of smoking with GDM risk. Nonetheless, in women with and without GDM, the OGTT profile and HbA1c varied depending on smoking status.
