The effect of side of implantation on unilateral cochlear implant performance in patients with prelingual and postlingual sensorineural hearing loss â A systematic review
Clinical Otolaryngology Sep 29, 2017
Kraaijenga VJC, et al. - The upshot of the implantation side was examined in this research, on the postoperative cochlear implant performance in patients with symmetrical severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. The evidence was found to be of low quality, owing to the heterogeneous nature of the study populations and outcome measures. Evidence was yielded for a right ear advantage in prelingually deafened children along with postlingually deafened adults. Since no left ear advantage was identified and taking into consideration the available evidence, cautious implantation was recommended of the cochlear implant in the right ear when other prognostic factors did not favour the left ear and when sensorineural hearing loss was symmetrical.
