The effect of Ramadan fasting on cardiovascular events and risk factors in patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Feb 05, 2020
Almulhem M, Susarla R, Alabdulaali L, et al. - As Muslims around the world observe Ramadan, the fasting month in Islam, every year, including people with diabetes, researchers sought to determine the effect of fasting on cardiovascular risk factors and events in people with diabetes. Searching Embase, Medline, Cochrane library and CINAHL, they identified 22 studies as eligible for inclusion in the review; five studies reported cardiovascular outcomes and 17 reported changes in risk factors. The analysis yielded inadequate data to associate Ramadan fasting with increased or reduced incidence of cardiovascular events in people with diabetes, though there were some indications suggesting an increase in the stroke risk. Inconsistent findings were generated in terms of risk factors as some favored Ramadan and others did not.
