The effect of quality of segmental bowel preparation on adenoma detection rate
BMC Gastroenterology Jul 16, 2019
Guo R, et al. - In this single-centered and cross-sectional study involving 5798 subjects (mean age was 61.4 ± 10.3 years old) who had colonoscopy, researchers examined the quality of bowel preparation segmentally and its impact on adenoma detection rate (ADR) and advanced adenoma detection rate (AADR) at corresponding bowel segments. In the final analysis, 4940 colonoscopies (14,820 bowel segments) were involved. Investigators found that cleanliness of segmental bowels and the amount of bubbles in bowels significantly have a significant impact on ADR and AADR. The better the preparation of the bowel in each segment, the less bubbles there are in the bowel, the higher ADR and AADR. The authors concluded that a repeat colonoscopy should be planned if any bowel segment is poorly prepared or if there are more bubbles, even if the bowel preparation overall assessment score is good or fair.
