The effect of preoperative nutritional status on postoperative complications and overall survival in patients undergoing pelvic exenteration: A multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional cohort study
American Journal of Surgery Apr 10, 2019
Lyell NJ, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective chart review of 199 patients who underwent pelvic exenteration, in order to assess the influence of optimization of preoperative nutritional status on outcomes in patients undergoing pelvic exenteration. They noted median overall survival (OS) of 25 months following PE. They noted worsened OS as well as increased incidence of any postoperative complication, but not 90-day mortality, among those with preoperative serum albumin <3.5 g/dL. Outcomes revealed increased complications and decreased OS in correlation to poor preoperative nutritional status. They recommend surgeons to maximize preoperative nutritional status for improving perioperative outcomes and long-term survival.
