The effect of preoperative anxiety level on mean platelet volume and propofol consumption
BMC Anesthesiology Feb 10, 2020
Uysal AI, et al. - Given the possibility of a link between increased platelet activity and anxiety and depression, researchers investigated whether higher mean platelet volume (MPV) would be seen in patients with high anxiety scores and whether patients with higher anxiety scores would have higher propofol induction time and total propofol consumption within the first 30 min of surgery. For this purpose, they used the Beck Anxiety Inventory. For MPV, the estimated cut-off value was 9.65. As per the findings, high preoperative MPV values and propofol consumption at 30 min was observed in patients with high preoperative anxiety scores. Experts suggested the clinical usefulness of MPV as it aids the prediction of the amount of anesthetic agents needed for the 30 mins of anesthesia.
