The effect of postoperative spinal infections on patient mortality

Casper DS, et al. - The link between surgical site infection (SSI) and mortality was investigated in this study. Furthermore, researchers intended to ascertain any factors that predict mortality in those diagnosed with SSI. Significant postoperative morbidity, resulting from SSI, was noted, with the risk of reoperation, prolonged hospitalization, and need for other invasive procedures. This work afforded evidence that SSI was associated with an increased mortality following elective spine surgery.
