The effect of postoperative complications on health-related quality of life and survival 12 years after coronary artery bypass grafting: A prospective cohort study

Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery Jun 18, 2021

Hokkanen M, Huhtala H, Laurikka J, et al. - In this study, the effect of postoperative complications on long-term quality of life (QoL) as well as on survival post-CABG (coronary artery bypass grafting) surgery was examined. Researchers analyzed prospectively obtained data of 508 patients who received isolated CABG. Patients’ QoL status was assessed using the RAND-36 Health Survey at preoperatively, 1 year and 12 years post-surgery. At least one complication developed in 205(40%) of 508 patients, and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) occurred in 73 (14%). Findings revealed that improvements even 12 years post-CABG were evident, compared with preoperative state, in both patients with and without complications despite the constant deterioration. Impaired long-term QoL was observed in relation to postoperative complications and particularly MACCE.
