The effect of onabotulinumtoxina on aura frequency and severity in patients with hemiplegic migraine: Case series of 11 patients
Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain May 24, 2018
Chen TY, et al. - Considering the prolonged and often debilitating nature of aura in patients with hemiplegic migraine, researchers ascertained the effect of onabotulinumtoxinA on aura frequency and severity in this specific subset of migraine patients. From July 1, 1994, to December 1, 2017, they retrospectively reviewed all clinical notes at their institution to identify patients diagnosed with hemiplegic migraine who received at least one set of onabotulinumtoxinA injections. OnabotulinumtoxinA was identified beneficial in reducing the frequency and severity of headaches and also in reducing the frequency and severity of the aura in 9 of 11 patients with hemiplegic migraine. This manuscript suggested that potential pathophysiologic mechanisms could have contributed to this effect.
