The effect of obstructive sleep apnea on three year outcomes in patients who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 16, 2019
Afzal A, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers examined late graft dysfunction (LGD; > 1 year) after orthotopic heart transplant (OHT) relative to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), as detected by polysomnography. Overall 146 patients were analyzed, of whom untreated OSA (OSA without use of continuous positive airway pressure therapy) at the time of transplantation was present in 29 (20%). They found that OHT patients commonly developed comorbid OSA and a three-fold risk of LGD was observed in patients with untreated OSA vs those who are treated or without OSA. Taking together both of these findings, they recommended to screen for and to treat OSA during the OHT selection period.
