The effect of metformin use on hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in diabetes mellitus patients
BMC Cancer Sep 06, 2019
Tsou YA, Chang WD, Lu JJ, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study of 141 hypopharyngeal cancer patients, including 49 patients without diabetes mellitus (DM) and 92 patients with DM, researchers focused on the influence and survival outcome of metformin on hypopharyngeal cancer with diabetes mellitus. The participants were recruited from a tertiary referral center. Both the non-DM and DM groups did not significantly differ in terms of patients’ characteristics, clinical T stage, N stage, metastatic condition, and disease stage. As per the findings, metformin use was associated with less distant metastasis and better survival outcomes in hypopharyngeal cancer DM patients.
