The effect of metabolic syndrome on the occurrence of restenosis after carotid endarterectomy
European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Oct 30, 2019
de Vries BMW, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the influence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on clinical outcomes in patients with cerebrovascular disease via assessing the how MetS affects restenosis occurrence following carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Between June 2003 and December 2014, 1,668 CEA procedures were performed in 1,577 patients at two tertiary academic referral centers in The Netherlands. MetS was defined as the presence of three or more of the following criteria: hypertension, obesity, high fasting serum blood glucose, high serum triglycerides, or low serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Outcomes revealed no preditive value of MetS for restenosis after CEA. Also, the presence of MetS seemed to have no negative influence on patient survival.
