The effect of lateral neck dissection on complication rate for total thyroidectomy
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Feb 23, 2020
Daniel J. Rocke, et al. - Researchers investigated the complication profile for total thyroidectomy with and without concomitant lateral neck dissection using the IBM MarketScan Commercial Database (2010–2014). The database yielded data from 55,204 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy or equivalent procedures. Total thyroidectomy with concomitant unilateral lateral neck dissection was undertaken in 2,743; of these, 560 patients underwent bilateral lateral neck dissection. They observed an increase in both overall and permanent complication rates for total thyroidectomy when unilateral and especially bilateral lateral neck dissection were additionally performed.
