The effect of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on serum thyroid-stimulating hormone levels in obese patients with overt and subclinical hypothyroidism: A 7-year retrospective study
Obesity Surgery Mar 24, 2020
Almunif DS, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers analyzed the impact of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormone replacement dosages in obese population with overt and subclinical hypothyroidism (SH). The sample consisted of all morbidly obese individuals with previous diagnosis of overt and subclinical hypothyroidism who had laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy from October 2009 to January 2017. The association between TSH and BMI and the effect of weight loss induced by bariatric surgery on TSH have been analyzed. Data reported that the overt and SH prevalence in morbidly obese individuals was 10.8% and 7.2%, respectively. The study included 36 patients with hypothyroid, and 67 patients with subclinical hypothyroid. A positively statistically significant link was noted between BMI and TSH. The findings support the efficacy of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in the obese population with overt and SH, as shown by the majority of SH resolution and the improvement of overt hypothyroidism.
