The effect of insurance type on access to inguinal hernia repair under the Affordable Care Act
Surgery May 15, 2018
Hsiang W, et al. - In this study of surgeon practice management, researchers examined the impact of the type of insurance on access to elective inguinal hernia repair and the disparities in access between Medicaid expansion and nonexpansion states. They randomly selected practices of 240 hernia repair surgeons across 8 states from the American College of Surgeons Find a Surgeon Database. Compared to BlueCross or Medicare patients, simulated Medicaid patients were noted to be less successful at scheduling appointments for surgical consultation. Despite increased coverage due to Medicaid expansion, fewer surgical practices in expansion states were identified to accept Medicaid patients.
