The effect of hyperoxia on mortality in critically ill patients: A systematic review and meta analysis
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Mar 01, 2019
Ni YN, et al. - The researchers conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis via search of electronic databases in order to determine the impact of hyperoxia in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). In all, 24 relevant trials exploring the role of hyperoxia in adults admitted to the ICU were included in the final analysis. In patients with mechanical ventilation, cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury, and post cardiac surgery, statistical heterogeneity was found between hyperoxia and normoxia groups. In critically ill patients, hyperoxia resulted to higher mortality, particularly in patients with cardiac arrest and extracorporeal life support.
