The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with hair transplantation surgery for the treatment of alopecia
Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Dec 11, 2020
Fan ZX, Gan Y, Qu Q, et al. - Given that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to be an excellent procedure to facilitate capillary regeneration and minimize ischemia‐reperfusion injury, researchers sought to assess the clinical effectiveness of HBOT as adjuvant therapy for hair transplantation surgery. Thirty‐four patients with II‐IV alopecia were randomly divided into the control group and the HBOT group. The control group was treated with routine FUE procedure, whereas the HBOT group combined with HBOT. Patients were administered with 100% oxygen under 2.0 atmospheres absolute pressure for 60 minutes via a facemask during HBOT and continuously received therapy every day for 7 days after surgery. Itching and folliculitis in the HBOT group decreased significantly. HBOT will minimize the shedding of postoperative follicles and contribute to fewer folliculitis and itching, which provides evidence that HBOT serves as an adjuvant treatment for hair transplantation surgery.
