The effect of group singing on the voice and swallow function of healthy, sedentary, older adults: A pilot study
The Arts in Psychotherapy Jan 29, 2018
Segall LE - This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of a group singing protocol on the conversational intensity, maximum phonation time, and mean swallowing pressure of healthy, sedentary, older adults. Observations revealed that early intervention could delay age-related decline of swallow function and voice quality. Physical and psycho-social aspects of aging could be influenced by swallow function and voice quality. An improvement in swallow function and voice quality by end of study was evident among participants. Findings thereby suggest that group singing interventions could meaningfully contribute to the respiratory health of the older adult population.
