American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Aug 15, 2020
Cheng L, Le Y, Yang H, et al. - Although the impact of dexamethasone on postoperative pain after thyroid surgery remains controversial, researchers sought to analyze the influence of dexamethasone on postoperative pain after thyroid surgery compared with placebo. Databases of PubMed, EMbase, Web of science, EBSCO, and Cochrane library were searched through May 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the impact of dexamethasone vs placebo on postoperative pain after thyroid surgery. Eight RCTs were included in the meta-analysis. Participants in the study were 734 patients. According to this systematic review and meta-analysis, dexamethasone demonstrates significantly decreased pain scores, number of required analgesics, analgesic consumption, nausea and vomiting, as well as rescue antiemetics compared with the control group for thyroid surgery.
