The effect of childhood trauma on the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms: A systematic review
Journal of Psychiatric Research Aug 22, 2021
Destrée L, Brierley MEE, Albertella L, et al. - Exposure to childhood trauma was identified to be significantly linked with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) severity across clinical and non-clinical populations. Herein, a range rather than a single type of childhood trauma was linked with OCD.
A search performed in four electronic databases yielded 24 studies for inclusion in this systematic review.
OCD samples were used in most studies (k = 16), with a few studies utilizing a sample consisting of a range of psychiatric disorders (k = 6) and some studies utilizing a general community sample (k = 2).
Childhood trauma and OCS severity were reported as significantly correlated (8 out of 16 of the studies utilizing OCD clinical samples, both studies using general population samples, and 5 out of 6 studies using mixed psychiatric samples).
