The effect of antibiotic prophylaxis on wound infections after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: A randomised clinical trial
International Wound Journal Oct 24, 2019
Guler Y, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if the use of prophylactic antibiotics in patients with laparoscopic cholecystectomy had any effects on the development of postoperative surgical wound infections. Patients receiving a single dose of prophylactic antibiotics before surgery were included in the prophylaxis group and those not receiving preoperative and postoperative intravenous and/or oral antibiotics were included in the no prophylaxis group. In total, 206 patients who had laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been analyzed. In patients who received prophylaxis, the infection rate was 4.5%. On the other hand, in the non-prophylactic group, the infection rate was 4.2%. The authors recommend that antibiotics should not be given before low-risk laparoscopic cholecystectomy for prophylaxis because there is no statistically significant difference in the rate of postoperative wound infection between patients who have been given prophylaxis or have not been given prophylaxis.
