The effect of age on survival following endoscopic resection vs surgery for T1a esophageal cancer
The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Dec 08, 2019
Raman V, Jawitz OK, Voigt SL, et al. - In view of the emergence of endoscopic resection (ER) as a treatment option for T1a esophageal cancer, researchers investigated how age influences patient selection for surgery vs ER. From the National Cancer Database, they assessed a total of 831 patients with cT1aN0M0 esophageal cancer (2010-2015) who met study criteria; of these 448 (54%) underwent ER and 383 (46%) esophagectomy. The analysis revealed an association of endoscopic resection similar survival compared with surgery in these patients regardless of age. This indicates that consideration could be given to ER for patients at low risk of nodal involvement across all age groups as an alternative to surgery for T1a esophageal cancer.
