The effect of a Persian herbal medicine compound on the lipid profiles of patients with dyslipidemia: A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial

Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine May 28, 2021

Niknafs A, Rezvanfar M, Kamalinejad M, et al. - Via this randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial including 74 dyslipidemic patients, the effects of a Persian medicinal (PM) compound on lipid profile were investigated. Participants were randomly split into two equally populated groups: one prescribed with a Persian medicinal herbal compound (n = 37) and a placebo group (n = 37). A Persian herbal medicine comprising fenugreek, sumac, and purslane was introduced. Prior to the initiation as well as post-completion of study protocol, measurements of biochemical parameters were obtained. A significant reduction in serum levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) was detected in the intervention group, as well as no rise in high-density lipoprotein levels was seen over time. Reduction, albeit not significant, was evident in very-low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels. Findings indicate that a Persian medicinal herbal compound could afford not only a safe but also a beneficial option to reduce serum cholesterol and LDL levels in dyslipidemic patients.
