The effect of a multidisciplinary care bundle on the incidence of delirium after hip fracture surgery: A quality improvement study
Anaesthesia Sep 29, 2019
Chuan A, Zhao L, Tillekeratne N, et al. - Given hip fracture surgery is often complicated by delirium, therefore, researchers proposed a peri-operative care bundle—that included the use of fascia iliaca blocks; rationalisation of analgesia; avoidance of drugs known to trigger delirium; a regular education program for staff; and continuous auditing of compliance—to standardize management in the emergency department, operating theatre and ward. They investigated the incidence of delirium in 150 patients prior to (control group) and in 150 patients following (care bundle group) the introduction of the care bundle. Findings revealed that the use of a multidisciplinary care bundle led to a clinically and statistically significant decrease in the incidence of delirium after hip fracture surgery in patients.
