The effect of a coaching program on asthma control and healthcare utilization in children with asthma
Journal of Asthma Oct 16, 2019
Horwitz D, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective interventional pilot study to determine whether attenuated respiratory morbidity and healthcare utilization can be ensured in children with asthma belonging to low socioeconomic backgrounds by implementing a designed coaching program in these children. Participants were children aged 3–18 years who had an asthma exacerbation leading to hospitalization in Soroka University Medical Center (SUMC) between October 2015 and May 2016. A diagnostic and personal educational office visit and a house visit by a nurse educator for asthma were the components of a coaching program conducted by medical and paramedical personnel. The intervention group was part of this coaching program. Demographically matched children with asthma, who had hospitalization at the SUMC, but did not go through any intervention, were included in the control group. Findings revealed no reduction in healthcare utilization was brought about by this coaching program, however, a trend towards having a shorter length of stay and subjective improvement in asthma control was seen in the intervention group.
