The ED-SED Study: A multicenter, prospective cohort study of practice patterns and clinical outcomes associated with emergency department sedation for mechanically ventilated patients

Critical Care Medicine Oct 20, 2019

Fuller BM, Roberts BW, Mohr NM, et al. - In this multicenter, prospective cohort study, researchers described emergency department sedation practices in mechanically ventilated patients and tested the assumption that deep sedation in the emergency department was correlated with worse outcomes. All sedation data (medications, monitoring) have been collected. There were a total of 324 patients examined. In the deep sedation group, the occurrence rate of acute brain dysfunction (delirium and coma) was 68.4% and in the light sedation group was 55.6%. In the emergency department, early deep sedation is common, carries over into the ICU, and may be linked to worse outcomes. Further research is needed in the emergency department's sedation practice and its connection with clinical outcomes.
