The difference of surgical outcomes between manifest exotropia and esotropia
International Ophthalmology Jun 24, 2018
Chen YW, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining the factors that affect ocular alignment and binocular sensory functions after strabismus surgery. They also performed a comparison of surgical outcomes between manifest exotropia (XT) and esotropia (ET). Via retrospectively studying 41 XT and 17 ET patients who had undergone strabismus surgery, researchers suggested that improvement in ocular alignment and binocular sensory functions could be achieved with surgical correction of strabismus in patients with manifest strabismus, regardless of onset age, strabismus duration, or type. The final motor and sensory outcomes could be predicted with the help of postoperative 1-month status. Compared to XT patients, ET patients would exhibit more benefit in terms of final successful ocular alignment and excellent binocular sensory functions from early surgery and maintaining postoperative small deviation angle.
